ChatGPT vs Claude for business in Australia: cost, data and fit

By , APAC Lead & Board Member, AIREPublished

For most Australian businesses the choice comes down to cost, data and the work, not the model. As at October 2026 ChatGPT Business costs A$28 per user per month billed annually and Claude Team A$34, from identical US prices. ChatGPT Enterprise is the only one of the two that can store your data in Australia. Claude includes Claude Code on every Team seat. Neither keeps processing in Australia. Test both on the same real work before you choose.

ChatGPT and Claude side by side

ChatGPT Business and Claude Team are built the same way: self-serve team plans with Standard and Premium seats, single sign-on and no training on your data by default. They differ on plan size, Australian data storage and what comes with each seat.

What each costs in Australia

The two vendors charge exactly the same in the US: US$20 per user per month for a Standard seat billed annually, US$25 monthly, and US$100 or US$125 for a Premium seat. The Australian prices differ.

  • ChatGPT Business: A$28 per user per month billed annually, or A$35 monthly. A Premium seat is A$140. OpenAI's pricing pages don't say whether these prices include GST.
  • Claude Team: A$34 per seat per month billed annually, or A$43 monthly. A Premium seat is A$170, or A$213 monthly. Anthropic says its Australian prices include 10% GST.

Ten Standard seats billed annually come to A$3,360 a year on ChatGPT Business and A$4,080 on Claude Team (derived from each list price: 10 seats × 12 months). Part of that gap may be GST, so compare your first invoices, not the pricing pages.

Enterprise

ChatGPT Enterprise is priced by OpenAI's sales team. Claude Enterprise publishes its price: US$20 per seat per month billed annually, plus usage at API rates, from 20 seats. Its bill grows with how much your team uses Claude.

Where your data goes

ChatGPT Enterprise is the only option of the two that can store your data in Australia, and neither keeps processing here. If Australian storage is a hard requirement, that settles it.

ChatGPT

  • New ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces can store content at rest in Australia. OpenAI lists Australia among ten storage regions.
  • ChatGPT Business lets you choose a storage region at checkout. OpenAI says this is rolling out gradually and isn't available to every customer yet. Outside the US, a copy of every prompt and response is also kept in the US for a limited time for abuse monitoring.
  • In-region processing is available only in Europe, the US and the UAE, so the work behind each answer can happen overseas.

Claude

  • Claude Team and Enterprise data is stored in the US.
  • Processing may be routed to the US, Europe, Asia or Australia, but you can't pin it to Australia.
  • Anthropic announced a Sydney office in March 2026 and says it's exploring Australian computing capacity, primarily to meet data residency requirements. Nothing is available yet.

Whichever you choose, write the data rule down before anyone starts. Our AI policy template is a starting point.

When ChatGPT is the better fit

  • Data must stay in Australia. ChatGPT Enterprise can store it here; Claude can't.
  • More than 150 people on a self-serve plan. ChatGPT Business takes up to 200; Claude Team stops at 150.
  • One assistant for everyone. ChatGPT Business includes ChatGPT Work, Codex, image generation, and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.
  • Lowest list price. A$28 a Standard seat against A$34, subject to the GST question above.

When Claude is the better fit

  • Developers in the team. Claude Code comes with every Team seat, so there's no separate coding tool to buy.
  • Heavy users who want the top model. Premium Team seats include Claude Fable 5.1 as a standard part of the plan.
  • Work that lives in Microsoft 365. Claude connects to Microsoft 365 and Outlook on Team, alongside Google Workspace, Slack and GitHub.
  • A published Enterprise price. Claude Enterprise lists its seat price and minimum, so you can budget before you talk to sales.

Who is using which

Claude has overtaken ChatGPT among US businesses that pay for AI through Ramp, a corporate card and spend platform. In its August 2026 data, 43.8% of those businesses paid Anthropic and 39.8% paid OpenAI. Ramp's customers lean towards smaller, tech-forward firms, so treat it as a signal, not a market share.

In Australia, Anthropic's own data shows Claude used at about 4 times the rate its population would predict, with 46% of Australian conversations about work (Anthropic, February 2026 data). OpenAI doesn't publish a comparable Australian figure.

How to choose

  1. Settle the data question first. If data must be stored in Australia, you're looking at ChatGPT Enterprise.
  2. Count your people. Over 150 on a self-serve plan rules out Claude Team; over 200 means either Enterprise.
  3. Run both on the same work. Give two small groups the same 3 real tasks for two weeks, then compare the output and how often people used it.
  4. Price the real seat mix. Most people on Standard seats, heavy users on Premium, and compare first invoices including GST.

The tool matters less than whether people use it on real work. We run ChatGPT training and Claude training for teams, and the three-way ChatGPT Enterprise vs Copilot vs Claude guide covers Microsoft Copilot too.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for business?

Neither is better across the board. The practical differences for an Australian business are elsewhere: ChatGPT Business takes up to 200 people and ChatGPT Enterprise can store data in Australia, while every Claude Team seat includes Claude Code. Run both on the same real tasks for two weeks before you decide.

Which is cheaper in Australia, ChatGPT or Claude?

On list price, ChatGPT Business. As at October 2026 a Standard seat is A$28 per user per month billed annually, against A$34 for a Claude Team Standard seat. The US prices are identical, and Anthropic says its Australian price includes GST, while OpenAI's pricing pages don't say either way. Compare the totals on your first invoices before you treat the gap as real.

Which one keeps our data in Australia?

Only ChatGPT Enterprise stores data at rest in Australia today, and only for new workspaces. ChatGPT Business is rolling out a choice of storage region at checkout, but OpenAI keeps a copy of every prompt and response in the US for a limited time for abuse monitoring. Claude Team and Enterprise store data in the US. Neither vendor keeps processing in Australia.

Do ChatGPT and Claude train on our business data?

Not by default on their business plans: ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and Claude Team and Enterprise. On the personal plans (ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and Claude Free, Pro and Max), training is something each user has to opt out of. Keep work on a business plan, where the commitment applies to everyone.

Can we use ChatGPT and Claude together?

Yes, and many teams do. Give everyone one tool as the default, and buy the second only for the roles that need it, such as Claude for developers who will use Claude Code. Turn on single sign-on for both and cover both in one AI policy.
