ChatGPT for business in Australia: plans, pricing and GST

Most Australian businesses with two or more people using ChatGPT for work belong on ChatGPT Business. As at September 2026 it costs A$28 per user per month billed annually (A$35 billed monthly), needs at least two seats, and OpenAI doesn't train on your workspace's data by default. Move to ChatGPT Enterprise once you need more than 200 seats, SCIM provisioning, invoicing or your data stored in Australia. A sole trader can get by on Plus at A$30 a month. On GST, a business registered for GST that gives OpenAI its ABN shouldn't be charged it, and a business that isn't registered pays it.
ChatGPT plans compared
OpenAI sells four ChatGPT plans for individuals (Free, Go, Plus and Pro) and two for organisations (Business and Enterprise). If a quote or an invoice says ChatGPT Team, it means Business: OpenAI renamed the plan on 29 August 2025.

What ChatGPT costs in Australia
OpenAI prices ChatGPT in Australian dollars for buyers in Australia. Its help centre lists AUD among the billing currencies for paid plans bought on chatgpt.com, and the pricing page quotes local prices. The same help centre gives the US price of a Standard Business seat as US$20 a month billed annually or US$25 monthly, and says pricing varies by country and currency. Annual billing is cheaper per seat. A Standard seat is A$28 a month on an annual plan and A$35 on a monthly one, and a Premium seat is A$140 against A$175. Ten Standard seats on the annual plan come to A$3,360 a year (derived from OpenAI's list price: 10 seats × A$28 × 12 months).
How Business billing works
- You pay for every seat in the workspace at the start of each billing cycle, whether or not someone is using it.
- A seat you add is charged straight away for the rest of the cycle. A seat you remove comes off at the next renewal.
- On an annual plan, added seats stay committed until the term ends. OpenAI says unused seats are generally non-refundable.
- Self-serve Business takes credit and debit cards only. There are no invoices, purchase orders, bank transfers or payment terms. If your finance team needs those, you're buying Enterprise.

OpenAI's contracting party is OpenAI OpCo, LLC in San Francisco, so the ATO rules to read are the ones for imported services and digital products. What happens next depends on whether your business is registered for GST.
If your business is registered for GST
The ATO says you shouldn't be charged GST on imported services and digital products that you use in your business in Australia. For the supplier not to charge it, you have to give them your ABN and state that you're registered for GST. ChatGPT's billing settings have a Tax ID field: under Settings, then Billing, on a personal account, and under Workspace settings, then Billing, on Business. OpenAI says a Tax ID change applies only to future invoices.
When the reverse charge applies
Not being charged GST at checkout doesn't always settle it. The ATO says you pay the GST yourself, through the reverse charge, when you're registered for GST and you wouldn't have been entitled to a full GST credit had GST been charged. Its examples are personal use and input-taxed purchases. The GST is 10% of the amount you paid, and you then claim whatever credit you're entitled to. If you'd have been entitled to a full credit anyway, the reverse charge doesn't apply.
The ATO also warns that quoting your ABN on a purchase for personal use brings the reverse charge in, and that penalties can apply for giving a supplier false information, such as an ABN when you aren't registered.
If your business isn't registered for GST
You pay GST on these purchases, the same as a consumer. The ATO notes it may be in the advertised price, added at checkout or shown on the receipt. OpenAI's pricing page doesn't say whether its Australian prices include GST, so check the tax line before you pay.
If you were charged GST by mistake
The ATO's advice is to ask the supplier for a refund, giving your ABN and stating that you're registered for GST. Claiming a GST credit for it instead only works when several conditions are met, including holding a valid tax invoice that shows the supplier's ABN or having paid A$82.50 or less. Overseas suppliers in the ATO's simplified GST system are given an ATO reference number rather than an ABN, and the ATO says a supplier without an ABN can't issue a valid tax invoice.
How each plan handles your data
Free, Go, Plus and Pro
OpenAI's pricing page says content on the individual plans is used to train its models, with an opt-out. Each person turns it off under Settings, Data controls, Improve the model for everyone. Temporary chats aren't used for training, though OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days for safety.
None of these plans has an admin console, SSO or a shared workspace. A business whose staff use personal accounts can't see what is being pasted in, and relies on every person having changed that setting.
Business
OpenAI doesn't train on Business workspace data by default, and says you own your inputs and outputs where the law allows. Workspace admins can view, export and delete members' conversations and set how long data is kept. Deleted conversations leave OpenAI's systems within 30 days, unless the law requires longer or OpenAI needs them to protect its services or others from harm. Business has passed a SOC 2 Type 2 audit, and OpenAI offers a data processing addendum for it.
Choosing where Business data is stored is rolling out gradually and isn't available to every customer. Where it is, you pick the region at checkout, and OpenAI still keeps a copy of every prompt and response in the United States for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring.
Enterprise
Enterprise adds the controls a security team tends to ask for: SCIM provisioning, enterprise key management, role-based access controls, IP allowlisting, and a compliance API that gives admins an audit log of conversations. The customer sets retention policies. OpenAI's comparison lists Enterprise, and not Business, as certified to ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701.
A new Enterprise customer can have its content stored at rest in Australia at no extra cost. That covers conversations, files, custom GPTs and memory, with backups kept in the same region. Inference residency, which keeps the processing that generates answers in-region, is offered only in Europe, the United States and the UAE as at September 2026.
The plan sets OpenAI's commitments. What your business has told its own customers about their information is still yours to honour.
Which plan suits your team
- One person, nothing confidential: Plus. Turn off Improve the model for everyone on day one.
- Two to 200 people: Business. Put most people on Standard seats and move the few who hit their limits to Premium. One workspace can hold both.
- More than 200 people, or a firm need for SCIM, invoicing, custom retention or Australian data residency: Enterprise. A Business subscription started since 24 August 2026 stops at 200 seats.
- A not-for-profit: ask OpenAI about OpenAI for Nonprofits, which offers up to 75% off Business or Enterprise.
The set-up to avoid is staff paying for Plus on their own cards and claiming it back. The business still pays for every person but gets no admin control, and whether its data trains OpenAI's models comes down to each person's settings.
Rolling ChatGPT out so people use it
Buying seats is the easy part. The usual failure comes after: the licences are paid for, and most of the team still uses ChatGPT like a search box, if they open it at all.
A rollout that sticks gets four things done before anyone is told to start.
- Choose the plan, and switch on SSO and the retention settings before anyone is invited.
- Write a one-page rule on what staff may paste in, and what stays out.
- Train people on their own documents, not invented examples.
- Build shared projects and custom GPTs for the work the team repeats each week.

Does ChatGPT charge GST in Australia?
It depends on who is buying. The ATO says a business registered for GST shouldn't be charged GST on imported services and digital products it uses in its business, as long as it gives the supplier its ABN and states that it is registered for GST. Can I pay for ChatGPT in Australian dollars?
Yes. OpenAI lists the Australian dollar as a billing currency for paid plans bought on chatgpt.com, and its pricing page shows Australian prices, such as A$30 a month for Plus. A subscription stays in the currency it started in: to move to AUD, cancel and subscribe again once the current period ends. A plan bought in the iOS or Android app is billed by Apple or Google, and Enterprise billing is arranged with OpenAI's sales team.
What's the difference between ChatGPT Business and Enterprise?
Business is self-serve. You sign up with a card, buy from 2 seats up to 200 on a new subscription, and get SAML SSO, an admin console and no training on your data by default. Enterprise is sold by OpenAI's sales team at a custom price. It adds SCIM provisioning, enterprise key management, role-based access controls, a compliance API, IP allowlisting, custom data retention, data residency in Australia and invoicing.

Can ChatGPT keep our data in Australia?
Partly. A new Enterprise workspace can store its content at rest in Australia at no extra cost. OpenAI doesn't offer inference residency in Australia yet, so the processing that generates answers can run elsewhere. For Business, choosing a storage region is rolling out gradually and isn't available to every customer, and OpenAI keeps a copy of prompts and responses in the United States for a limited time for abuse monitoring.
Is ChatGPT Team the same as ChatGPT Business?
Yes. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on 29 August 2025. It says the rename didn't change the plan, but pricing and seat options change over time, so check an older quote against today's pricing page.
